Top U.S. and Chinese officials will meet in London on Monday to resume trade talks aimed at easing tensions that have escalated beyond tariffs to include export controls. The talks follow a preliminary agreement made last month in Geneva and a recent phone call between President Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The U.S. delegation includes Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. China’s team is led by Vice Premier He Lifeng. A key issue is China’s recent suspension of rare earths exports, which disrupted global supply chains critical to sectors like automotive, aerospace, and defense.
While the Geneva deal led to a market rally and a temporary easing of tariffs, U.S. officials accuse China of not fully complying—especially on mineral shipments. The UK is hosting the talks but not participating directly.
Broader tensions remain unresolved, including disputes over Taiwan, China’s economic model, and fentanyl trafficking.
